The Bible characterizes Christianity and Christians in terms of godliness and purity of heart and mind. In salvation sin is renounced in all it’s forms: the essence of Repentance from sin. It is also characterized in terms of embracing holiness: the essence of Faith.
In The Bible the word ‘Believe’ as it is applied to salvation is the word ‘Commit.’ We are not called to simply embrace a new idea, but to commit to a new ideal. The ‘old’ is put off, the ‘new’ is put on.
Therefore, as The Bible addresses and/or condemns sin and sinful behaviors or attitudes, the Christian’s commitment is to shed whatever is contrary to those principles or ideals and embrace their opposite number: to epitomize in attitude and behavior what the Bible calls holiness or godliness.
What this means is, a Christian IS and a Christian BELIEVES and DOES.
There was a time when American Ideals incorporated lip service to these ideals. It was not that Americans or American Policy reflected the fulness of these ideals, however, they were The Pattern.
We had “Blue Laws:” A host of things we could not do on Sunday.
We had laws against adultery, homosexuality and even atheists voting.
Ordinary citizens treated one another with respect. Lying was a great ‘sin.’
Drunks were respectful in public and vulgar speech was not used in polite company. Not everyone was a Christian; not even among those who made a claim of being one. But most people acted more like Christians than Church folks do today.
Today, there is great debate over what IS or IS NOT wrong or bad behavior, even among so-called Christians. It is not simply WHAT is wrong, but whether or not WRONG is wrong, and everyone pretends to know what The Bible says on the subject.
Christians, Preachers, Entire Denominations are denying that Jesus ever said anything negative about certain behavior, or that The Bible condemns them.
I thought a few Bible Verses might help explain where we are, today:
The Apostle Peter:
For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known [it], to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog [is] turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. II Peter 2:20-22
The Apostle Paul
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;… I Tim. 4:1
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all [men], as theirs also was. II Tim. 3:1-9
Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; II Thess 2:3
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; II Tim. 4:3
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, [and commanding] to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. I Tim. 4:1-3
The Bible also issues a Warning:
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
