Where Is The SBC Going?

SBCConf

This week the Southern Baptists conducted their 2014 Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission Conference in Nashville, TN. By all accounts the LGBT Community is touting it as a WIN-WIN for their Team!

In September, the Executive Committee of the SBC, kicked out a California Church whose pastor embraces homosexuality, claiming that minister and church are not in “cooperation” with the SBC’s stance on LGBT issues.

This week Dr. Al Mohler opened the Ethics and Religious Liberty Conference by apologizing for “denying the reality of sexual orientation,” and closed with a pastor saying, “no one goes to hell for being homosexual.”

How do we Keep Score? What’s really going on, here?

One issue may be found in the response Americans United For Separation of Church and State received from the 84,000 letters they sent to churches, telling them to stop preaching political sermons or face the loss of their tax-exempt status.

While the threat is false, on the face of it, they did receive a fairly large percentage of ‘hate mail,’ from pastors, some of it crude and combative. “Drop Dead!” is one of the milder responses.

The spiritual state of The Church-at-large may be at an all-time low! Biblical knowledge and understanding may be almost non-existent! However, Al Mohler is NOT one of these! Therefore, one can only guess at the WHY or the WHAT of this Meeting.

While it is true so-called Christians have not been as polite as they might have been, in what they have said, or in the way they have said things about homosexuality and those pushing that agenda, it does not change the Reality. In every passage of the Bible where the issue is discussed, it is called SIN.

For a pastor to say: “no one goes to hell for being homosexual,” strains credulity. Every human being on the planet deserves Hell! None of us are as Righteous as God! The sins we commit demonstrate our moral condition.

We believe, however, that Jesus paid for those sins on Calvary, taking the individual attitudes and behaviors off the table. We [all human beings, past, present and future] face the same Judgment: What did you do with My Son? The Great White Throne judgment, pictured in the Book of Revelation, makes that point!

A sinner, redeemed by the blood of The Lamb, has a New Heart! A New WANT TO — Phil. 2:13! And a New POWER to go along with it! The physical habit / orientation may provide a lingering desire, but following through with it is still sin! And every Child of God knows it!

Jesse James loved to rob banks! So what? If a saved Jesse James robbed a bank, 1. he would know it was sin, and 2. he would repent of it and purpose NOT to do it again! And he would do this EVERY time he robbed a bank, until it stopped, not to mention the steps he would take to avoid robbing banks!

“Know ye not that the unrighteous [at heart] shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor effeminate [men who act like women, in regard to sex], nor abusers of themselves with mankind [men who use other men for sex — sodomites] nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God [I Cor. 6:9-10]

BUT…”such were some of you! but ye are washed! ye are sanctified! ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” v. 11

Christians need to learn how to condemn a sinful behavior without unnecessarily condemning the person committing it. However, what’s being reported concerning this Conference seems to cross over into a tacit acceptance that some people are simply mistaken or misguided, rather than debauched.

  1. Threatening a church that it would lose it’s tax exempt status seems strange. The 501.c.3 category does not legally apply to churches, but was illegally applied to them by Lyndon Johnson. According to the Constitution churches are already tax exempt simply by the fact that they are churches.
